“There are significant reasons why the repository at Yucca Mountain has not been built,”

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said he found it “troubling that the Trump administration is moving swiftly to advance the Yucca Mountain facility.”

Raskin cited concerns with volcanic and seismic activity in Nevada, as well as the potential of groundwater contamination from nuclear waste storage within the Nye County ridge.

“We feel that volcanism and seismic activity are major problems for putting a repository at Yucca Mountain and should be considered as major risks,” said Eugene Smith, a professor emeritus of geology at UNLV and a volcanism expert for the Nevada Agency for Nuclear Projects.

That would mean the old volcanoes in the area, or even new ones, could explode, he said.
